A Few of My Favorite Things

To tell the truth, I've always been a bit scared of type. I've seen such beautiful examples of type work on display in the art buildings, and I'm always absolutely amazed. I tend to think, "wow, I could never do that." I'm really interested in children's illustrations and animation, so I tend to focus on imagery and neglect the typography. Bad habit. I'm really looking forward to this class so that I can overcome this problem.

Here is a list of my top ten typefaces. I'm sure as the class progresses this list will likely change. (Click image for full size)

As I mentioned before, I really like children's illustrations -- therefore I tend to select more traditional typefaces. However, in searching the various sites provided on the blog, I found some interesting sans serif fonts. I really like Futura. It seems very clean and simple.

So, as a wrap up, I should probably mention a few more things about myself. Favorite books -- that's a tough one. I really like the work of Leila Abdoulela. She's most famous for "Minaret," which explores the life of a Muslim woman rediscovering her faith in England after being exiled from Sudan. I also like pretty much anything by Anne Tyler and Flannery O'Connor. As far as design books, I really like Richard William's book -- The Animator's Survival Kit (it's design related anyway. I don't actually read a lot of magazines, so I can't say much about them.

Favorite websites:

Superb animation from an outstanding school in France (both 2D and 3D)

Beautiful animation sampling from one of the best animation schools in the U.S. (CalArts). You have to watch Lights Out (top of the list)! It's jaw dropping animation. I can't believe one student did it.

3D animation from Ringling College. Again, amazing student work!
