It's kinda hard to see, so I'll describe the general gist of the idea in more detail here. The first idea I have (labeled one) is to create a kind of Monster Packet that holds Monster Alphabet/ Number cards inside. The packet opens as shown... as if the monster were opening his mouth. The cards themselves are sketched below. They would be similar to the pages found in an alphabet book... but are removable and may be handled (may help in the learning process for children... they can really get up close and personal to see the cards in close range). Also, as a promotional item, I think cards are good because they can show the font off on a more personal level. Stop me, I'm blathering. Anywho, idea number two is similar to number one, except the layout is a bit different. The layout would fold out from the center and have pockets on the side which would contain letters on the left and numbers on the right. The exterior package would itself me a monster (same as in the first idea). The third idea I had was to make a more traditional alphabet book. The layout for the cover is shown, as well as a sample Page.
Note: The Tongue Monster on the right has nothing to do with my typeface... he's just a little inspirational sketching I did while I was thinking.... He's from Mars in case you were wondering... says so right under him... so it must be true.
Back to business. Here's the second page of my sketchbook:
So my forth ideas was to make a sticker... I didn't explore this idea too much because I had another as I was sketching... therefore I kind of dropped this one. My fifth idea is another variation on the first two. again, it's a foldable Monster container... the Monster cards may be removed from his mouth. The trouble I'm having with this ideas, as well as the first two, is figuring out exactly how to construct these. I can see how it might be done if the items contained within the Monster's mouth were thin...like a couple of sheets of paper. The problem is that there would be 36 cards -- 26 for the alphabet and 10 for the numbers. My sixth idea I think is my favorite! I want to make them actual trading cards with an actual trading card container. I could probably fold out one of my card envelopes to figure out how it's constructed. Basically, I want it to look like the mouth opens up at the top where the cards are removed. I also quickly sketched some of the cards. I like the idea of having "A is for..." on the one side, and then the answer on the back, kind of like a flashcard.
Here's the third page of my sketchbook:
Basically, my final idea was to have a more box-like container for the cards. The cards would then be pulled out from the side. Additional card sketches appear below (forgive the super quick drawings). The front would say "B is for" and the back "Baker". More monster friends on the right. So these are the sketches I've come up with so far.
I also did some research and found some interesting images. I looked up a lot of product packaging and found some interesting material. Here's the first:
I'm not even sure what's being promoted, but the container sure looks cool! I like the foam on the inside. It looks super professional to me. I want to keep my design looking professional and polished, so this was inspiring to me. I like how everything seems to have a place within the container.
I also looked up some children's merchandising, and came across these foam figures:
It's a Foam Farm! So cute. Nice for young children, too.
So I also found this super cool video on how to create stuffed monsters (of all things!) Here's the video, in case you ever want to try (I'm kinda scared myself... my monsters would turn out warped with sewing sticking out on all sides...) Here's a picture of the Crafty Monsters created by Rachel Hobson for craft Magazine.

Also, here's a link to the video if you want to try and make your own lovable monsters:

That like the longest link ever, right?
That's all folks! For now...
